NWN2 - The Saga Continues...
The single player campaign is rolling right along... I find myself looking forward to time like I would with a good book. I hate putting it down, and count the hours until I can finally return to it.
The characters are very interesting, and very interactive. I did find, at first, a little overwhelmed trying to control 4 characters at once (although once an aspiring DM, I found quickly that I am not the best at multitasking battles with multiple characters).
Then I remembered the pause button.
Now some might consider it 'cheating'. I simply use it so I can then direct every character and give their actions the attention needed, as if they were my sole character. It does make the battles much more interesting, and I find the coordination makes a huge difference in the outcome. Not to mention I am starting to get some very kewl screenshots.
Zone's are rather large, and zone transitions are not outrageously long. I'm not sure how it will be on line, but they are not any worse than say EQ or WoW.
I am curious to see if there will be a great deal of lag with these larger zones. I can't imagine anyone would ever be playing these with a dial-up connection.
All the characters are about 8th level now, and I think I've only been wiped once. Needless to say the battles are not very awe inspiring, or very challenging for that matter, at this point. At this level, you still have to be smart about your decisions, or you will quickly find yourself in trouble.
Making decent gold, and there is quite an abundance of mythical and magical gear and weaponry to choose from. I think it may even be more than Hala!
I still have yet to do much crafting, but I will dabble in that soon enough.
I'm already planning a second character to go through the campaign with a bit darker lilt, to see how it affects the game.
Still haven't ventured into the toolset yet. I'm having too much fun watching the story unfold to want to bother with that just yet.

Actually, it has little to do with the chairs. Its a script that forces the character into a sitting animation. So, theoretically, you could put the same script on a lever, and if pulled, your character would try to sit on it (ouch). I think that's maybe what Dune was getting at.
I can see sittable chairs being a bit more complicated in NWN2 --probably having to do with the walkmesh. Honestly though, its not something I've gotten around to experimenting with. But, I do remember a Dev saying something about sittable chairs being something they hadn't planned for and he wasn't sure it would even be possible.

Gah! The entire thing went over my head then.silverdragonams wrote:Actually, it has little to do with the chairs. Its a script that forces the character into a sitting animation. SD wins. Chairs aren't sittable in NWN. It's been made so that you can do a sit animation in relation to the chair. And Bioware didn't do that.silverdragonams wrote:Actually, it has little to do with the chairs. Its a script that forces the character into a sitting animation. once again, this is not something I've had the time to experiment with so I'm not 100% sure on this....
but
Animations for sitting on the ground and sitting in a chair are both listed as script functions in NWN2, so making "sitable chairs" should be do-able.
Whether it can be done with the script currently being used has yet to be seen.

Agreed about the role playing aspect; I was looking at the 'classroom' screenshots and the clearing pictures.. I remember 'laying down' in the long grass... sitting in the baths.... 'sleeping'.
I think I may have to break out the toolset just to try a few scripts and see what's available.
I'll keep you posted.

imo, they didnt think of many things, while making the game. seems like, they were like "uh, let the community do he finetuning. they'll do it for 'free'. riiiiight."
give the game a few months, maybe a year and we'll see....
oh and when Dragon Age comes out, what will we do then? look into it ? and leave nwn1/2?
whatever.
I dont have nwn2 yet, waiting until I can afford me a better comp., but from what I read and hear, the game needs a lot patching up.
hope in the end we'll all get the feeling we now have with nwn1.
peace,
P.

Hopefully this will ease your minds Proof that it is possible.
Sorry about the poor lighting. It took me all "day" just to get him to sit.
For anyone building Hala2, you have to make the chair usable and walkable. The script I used was the standard sitdown script from Avlis player housing, BUT it didn't work so well.
I could only get the character to actually sit maybe once in 10 tries. The rest of the time he would stand there or bend his knees slightly and stare dumbly at the stool.
I think the sticking point might be that maybe there's no real orientation to placeables, like there is in NWN1. (the blue arrow that appears when you put a placeable down). That's what tells the character which direction to face when sitting. So a better way might be to use a waypoint under each chair, and a script on the chair that tells the pc to play a sitting animation based on the location and orientation of the nearest waypoint. Might be worth trying anyway....

I spent some time with the toolset last night.
Sitting and laying down are not inherent features, and there is a great deal more lacking from what I have seen and read.
I still have had problems with the viewpoint, which is a major concern with a lot of people trying to navigate with their character.
I would say NWN2 is more of a work in progress. I think the most unfortunate thing is the fact that we have actually LOST features that were a part of NWN1. When you do make a sequel to a game, it should at least have with it the same core functionality as the original, not less.
World Building will be fun, with some interesting new features, but again, with the loss of some other basic features from NWN1, it's not a move forward. I don't think this game will be at the level of NWN1 for at least 6 months to a year, and that's a conservative estimate.

I'm still undecided on the game.
I thought downloading a 100meg fix (or two?) the first time getting the game was a little crazy but it's better that there IS a fix I guess.
The biggest thing I don't like is the camera and interface. It sucks. You're gonna find ourself constantly spinning the camera around trying to realign it with where you're going. Half the time I get my ass kicked because im clicking all over the screen trying to click on a bad guy and my guy just does circles. Very annoying.
I really like the ability to switch and cotrol your NPCs. It gives you a chance to play different dudes through senariors and it's much easier than just trusting AI. Your quite limited in how you level them up in terms of what classes they are (it seems all set in stone) but you can choose feats and skills thankfully.
I'm still fighting with staying evil, might start over from scratch and be a complete dick to everyting and just kill everything but I find games aren't really set up for that kinda play.
Theirs ots of cool new feats, think they did a good job with thise. Graphics are upgraded but I think I still prefer the nwn1 era stuff more, seems to feel more real. I don't think nwn2 will lend itself very well to multiplayer to be honest but we'll have to see
